Valentines...

It was Valentines day yesterday. I arranged for the final year UCS students to have their very own Valentines cards flogged off in the campus shop.

My poster design

I created a poster encapsulating a veryrealistic view on what Valentines is about. I got some backlash from the powersthat be demanding every poster be tore down from the university walls and subsequently our degree show blog (link). Thisposter suggests sex; there are no two ways about it, that was my goal. There areno graphic images used here, just suggestive ones. The ‘offence’ comes from the bond between twohumans genitalia, I use inverted commas for a reason.

The Sun's "Glamour" shot

This exists. In every newsagent up and downEngland, turn the front cover and you can see this. Actual photographicevidence of a semi-nude female being lauded as ‘sexy’. Not beautiful, not elegent, notbewitching, not graceful, but ‘sexy’. Now the first four adjectives can beaccurate descriptions of the female form in certain conditions. However thatfifth adjective is for an image like this, I’m not saying that I agree withthat adjective for an image like this, but it is. It is an image thatapparently, the English citizen wants to look at over their morning coffee, asthey kiss their wife when they greet her, as they say goodbye to their childrenas they go to school. This is apparently socially acceptable.

So when I’m told I have created an offensive poster that suggests sex, Ithink I can be forgiven for being slightly… Well I’ll just say annoyed. Whentwo human beings are so close to the point that they love each other, the oneactivity that they can achieve together, the one sacred activity is that ofsexual intercourse. I don’t want to go into too much more detail, as I’m consciousI’ll appear to people to be some kind of froth mouthed sex maniac. My visual representation may be percieved as unsophisticated, it may be crude, this is due to the way I have worded it. I agree, it is does have a low tone, I am after all directing this poster at students, however to say that sex is offensive is bizzarre.

The factof the matter is this, until people accept what the realities of life are, weas image makers, thought provokers and communicators. Will never be able to accuratelyportray the world that surrounds us. I for one, do not like that closed pocket of a world.

The Secret Project

I have been researching Sloths for my latest project (this one is quite a secret, so I can't give too much away!) But I don't think I have seen anything cuter than a baby Sloth, a cute, furry animal, with a face that constantly looks happy, that hugs you!

I recently sketched a creature for the project, and it definitely needs to take inspiration from this lil' guy to stop it being the abomination it currently is.

I think I'm going to nickname him Terrance... The poor dude needs a nice name like Terrance.

Printing Puddles

I finally have my first official print from my Swirls in the Puddles series. It's been quite a while since I undertook this project, (September 2010), and besides from a couple of months, it has always been a side project.

With a side project like this, it's always hard to maintain that motivation, after all, this isn't a money making experiment. This image is one of the very first I took in the series, and the one which not only clarified what the project could become, but cemented my passion to carry out the project. This print has again fuelled my passion for the project and pushed me to try my hardest to finalize the series as well as I possibly can.

Turner Classic Movies

Recently I was briefed by Turner Classic Movies (TCM) to choose any three films and create concept posters for all of them to be used as a set.

Quite quickly I decided upon, Alien, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and No Country for old men. All films I love and also all well known films.

I decided that each of my films must each link visually, each must link with their idea, but they also must sum up the main message of the film, or what the film is about. Without these, the posters wouldn't succeed as a representation of the film or as a set.

I spent some time deliberating how to link all these posters together, I did so not only with the idea, but also visually. After analysing all three films, noting down important and iconic moments within each and what was the underlying message behind them all. It became apparent the main theme subject of each, was about something or someone hiding, or chasing.

*Spoiler Alert*
Alien is about "the perfect organism" without morals or concience, it is perfectly evolved to survive with a variety of deadly survival techniques. Throughout the film, the Alien hides and attacks wiping out the entire crew, bar one in Ripley. Ripley sets a self destruct sequence blowing up the Nostromo and seemingly wiping out the Alien in a visually spectacular explosion. Not all is as it seems though and the Alien is perfectly hidden amongst the architecture of Ripley's escape pod, Giger's design works at it's finest during this scene to create one of the ultimate shock scenes in film history. I abstacted what the architecture of the pipes looked like and visually represented it using this single line which the alien can hide within.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the most abstract film of the three, ultimately is about not knowing what you have until it is gone. In this case, it is their love. Although there are a lot more messages within this film, there are bound to be in such an abstract film, this was the main message the film wanted to communicate. To give you some clue as to what this film is about, in a fictional version of New York city where a new treatment is available to delete your memories, two lovers fall out and delete their memories of each other. The film takes place within the male participent of the relationships mind, Joel. As his memories get deleted he slowly relises he still loves his partner and desperately tries to stop his memories from getting deleted (in his mind). I visualised this by using a spiral as an abstract version of the mind. Joel and Clementine (his girlfriend), hide at the end of this memory hoping for it to not be deleted.

No Country For Old Men, is an absolutely brilliant thriller, all about a chase and a new kind of evil in the modern world. One way that Chigurh (the killer) goes about representing this, is by carrying a captive bolt pistol or cattle gun around with him. Initially the purpose of this isn't apparent. In one scene Chigurh is seen carrying it towards a civilian, unawares to what is about to happen. Chigurh stops the man, talks naturally to him, puts the captive bolt pistol to his skull and kills him. Chigurh had to carefully plan how to kill another man, it can't be classed as a crime of passion, steps were took to prevent knowledge of who was the killer, and how the person was killed. The wound leaves no bullet, yet mimics the damage of a bullet. This new kind of evil and chase was what I pinpointed to be the main message of the film. The single line being an abstract version of rural Texas, the captive bolt pistol being a representation of this new kind of evil hidden amongst the Texan architecture.

My latest shoot for Swirls in the Puddles was located at an abandoned Magnesium production site. My SWITP photos won't give you a clue on what a fantastic place it is, so here is a panoramic I took on the shoot.

The area looks like it's straight out of a post-apocalyptic film. I haven't edited my SWITP pictures yet, but it looks like a successful shoot so far.

I've just about got the hang of Zbrush now, and I am absolutely amazed by it, condsidering how much I'm enjoying it and how many different applications 3D can apply to. I may leave 2D illustration altogether!

I recently visited Maurizio Anzeri's first UK solo exhibition at the Baltic.

These once lost forgotton portratis are now masked by these intricate woven patterns. I find myself trying to look past them and uncover what was once the main focus. The embroidery seems to convey much more about what their personality could be, far better than any
portrait. Fantastic.

Cradle to Cradle - Remaking the Way We Make Things

William McDonough & Michael Braungart's book Cradle To Cradle arrived today. It is a book that Is questioning whether Recycling is the best method to preserve the environment and whether methods should be introduced which see nature iteslf as our model for making things.

The cover is a Waterproof Durabook, as it says on the front, I wonder if they explain within their reasons for choosing this type of cover, considering the topic they discuss.

Can't wait to get stuck into it.

Childhood Paintings

Continuing on from my last post, I found these paintings of Birds I made, I must have been 14 when I painted these. I remember being quite proud of them at the time, but it's strange that was about 7 years ago and they were completely far removed from any type of illustration I've ever done before or since them. I might have to whip out the rusty paintbrush's and give some birds a try again and see what 7 years experience does to the paintings.

I'm a bit late in posting these, however they've been up in Whitespace's windows for a few weeks now.

Pete Seymour, senior designer at Whitespace had this to say about them on their website:

We regularly challenge our uni work placements to come up with something for our window displays at White Space. This time round it was the turn of our intern Dale Peart, currently studying at UCS.

Having given him the brief to simply to come up with something intriguing and visually striking he was unlikely to disappoint. Don't forget we've seen some of his fascinating (if not slightly challenging!) illustrations during his time here already.

On this occasion, he devised a truly abstract, mind-bending series of wanted posters depicting some of the towns most ubiquitous pests!

There have been questions asked about this boy's mental stability, especially after hearing some of his tales of uni (mis)adventures, and there certainly have been after seeing his work! However, whatever sinister forces are at work to produce these psychedelic wonders, we think you'll agree they're truly captivating and exciting - the boy's got talent!

I'm not alone in loving them and if you're passing by look out for them in our ever-changing windows.

I created a character using Thinking Putty, to go in an animation for a film festival, and left it to stand for an hour. I come back and it looks like this! My character will have to be stubby and easy to replicate if I'm to use this technology, it would be good if I made a cast.

Watership Down

I've just re-watched Watership Down. I had forgotton how it potrays just how brutal life is, I have never felt such compassion for each individual character within a film, this is definately helped by the animation style. It features some brilliant animation, such as the introduction scene which is reminscent of a lot of Aboriginal art.

The majority may seem outdated, but I think that, along with the raw sounds caused by dated voice recorders. They are the impetus for the brutal portrayal, no fancy gimics, just graphic images and raw sound effects create this stark reality of wildlife.

I'd love to see some more contemporary animation take note of the risks involved within this film and try something which runs against the mill, as the only thing recently I have seen that comes close is a Japanese film 'Grave of the Fireflys'.

Swirls In The Puddles is an ongoing photography series that I've had underway for 8 months now, the longer it goes on the more I'm understanding what works and what doesn't.

After a 3 hour search and investigation around Ipswich this time, I came back with only 3 photos that I was happy with (above image). 1 photo an hour... good job I'm not getting paid for this project and I have all the time in the world to perfect it!

This probably wont be used, however it may be a catalyst for a whole new catagory in my Swirls In The Puddles series.

My workspace was cluttered by paper and pens and coffee and sketchbooks and gadgets and dirty thongs, wait... what?

All my draws were full with much of the same, however with much more of these dirty thongs I never knew about (I'm blaming this on the beer).

However a handy addition to my wall is this, a pencil case for the wall.
I can see my tools for the job and the weights in a nice, neat organised fasion.

Redesign

Had a redesign my website so it actually looks like a website rather than just a few bits of my work that i puked out onto a webpage.
There's still a lot to add, however it looks stylized and does it's job, if a little slow.
Lots more to add, however do I want it to represent all of me, or just the corporate stuff to get myself work... Hmmmm.

Lessawareness campaigns?

More and more, I am questioning my role as a Graphic Designer. Recently I have been thinking about "awareness campaigns" and how I as a Graphic Designer am to promote a needless campaign.
I am to raise awareness to families to buy another overweight spoilt child another useless gadget.
Surely if I create an awareness campaign it should be for something that people need to be aware of. People don't need to be aware of the latest gadget, they need to be aware of real world plights, in by creating an "awareness campaign" am I making people "less aware"?
